Pemmican is one of the northland's soul foods, a mix of bear grease, wild rice, dried fruit and meat, and other hearty, sustaining niblets than sustain energy and survive rough travels outdoos. It makes an excellent ration food, and can be obtained in most Ojibwe or Cree villages for a low price or a fair barter. The Summer Solstice Festival at Chequamegon / La Pointe features the buying and selling of some of the best pemmican to be found at any time of year on the lake.
